Most of the media coverage of OBL’s demise has been, frankly, pretty boring. But I thought this picture was amazing:
Now, it’s important to remember that this came from the White House photographer, not some pool reporter, so its release was selective, and thus almost certainly strategic. In theory it could even have been staged. But there’s just no way it was. (Maybe HRC realized the camera was going — if not that’s an incredible candid). Look at Biden. Look at Obama. You do not see those faces on the President and Vice President in public. And it’s strangely reassuring to see them here.
Of course, I do have one question about the photo: is that really the situation room? It looks more like a spare closet . With the cramped space and barren walls and removable laptops on the congressional-hearing-room-style table? I’m not trying to be snarky here at all, but I honestly thought the situation room was more likely to look like Admiral Akbar’s room for viewing the Battle for Endor and the 2nd attack on the death star, with holograms everywhere and maybe even Obama in a floating chair:
At the very least, I would be much reassured to know that the people in the above picture are staring at an 80 inch HDTV. Because there are no contextual clues that it’s not a 13″ black and white from the early 70’s. Hey Biden, could you go shake the rabbit ears.
Maybe it was a flat screen a la Michael Scott’s from the office.
This looks more like it:

(but what’s in Obama’s jacket?)
(and see the rest of the photostream)
…but it’s still not as impressive as the one on The West Wing:
I’m very surprised the administration would release this particular picture. Who’s the smallest guy in the room? What’s his body language? If we want to play with the politics of this picture and take it a bit further, why is it one of the only two women in the room is “aghast” at the violence of it all. Is that very Presidential?
